Barry Johnston

Barry Johnston is the founder and President (Kancho) of the International Sabaki Karate-Do Teshinkai Organization. With his remarkable expertise, he has earned the  title of Grandmaster within the system.

Kancho Barry Johnston has dedicated over 45 years of his life to teaching karate on a full-time basis. Currently, he spearheads the expansion of the Teshinkai system into Asia, with plans to extend its reach to Europe, Africa, and America. His ultimate goal is to make quality karate training accessible to everyone, regardless of their race, religion, gender, or socio-economic background. Kancho firmly believes that a comprehensive martial arts program can positively transform the lives of individuals and communities, promoting physical fitness, healthy living, personal self-defense, and a positive mindset.

Residing in Bendigo, Victoria, Australia, Kancho operates one of the nation's most renowned martial arts schools, known as the "Bendigo Mixed Martial Arts Academy!" This establishment serves as the World Headquarters for the Teshinkai Organization. In addition to karate, the academy offers Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai Kickboxing, providing a well-rounded mixed martial arts approach that is highly sought after worldwide. The facility boasts the largest weight training facilities in the region, enabling true high-performance training.

Throughout his extensive career, Kancho Johnston has nurtured countless students, guiding them towards achieving black belts and gaining recognition in competitions. He himself has a history as a competitor, having participated in various State titles before representing his skills at the Kyokushinkaikan International Kurjurnas Brawijaya Cup in Indonesia in 1981. Upon returning, Kancho Johnston established his school, embarking on a lifelong journey in martial arts. Inspired by the transformative power of martial arts in his own life, he strives to provide others with the same opportunities for growth and self-improvement.

Kancho Johnston played a pivotal role in shaping the martial arts industry in Australia. In 2001, he collaborated with the Department of Sport and Recreation Australia and the Office of Training and Further Education to establish martial arts as a recognized vocational training program. His contributions helped create the Certificate II, III, IV, and Diploma of Sport Coaching for Martial Arts, which became the universal standard in the industry upon its release in 2003. As the head of the Registered Training Organisation, Australian College of Sports Development, Johnston issued over 14,000 martial arts industry qualifications between 2003 and 2014, injecting over $40 million into the industry during that period. Notably, his college also developed the "Skills for Life" program, a martial arts-based vocational training initiative for secondary schools. The program benefited thousands of students, enhancing their overall academic performance and opening doors to further education.

Beyond the physical realm, Kancho Barry Johnston's involvement with martial arts has profoundly impacted the lives of individuals, fostering character development and instilling respect, both in the younger generation and among older practitioners who experience improved physical and mental well-being.
