Renshi Jonathan Gleeson, a 5th Dan Black Belt in Karate, has been immersed in martial arts since 1991, dedicating himself to Kaizen (Freestyle) Karate, which originated in Maitland, NSW. His martial arts journey is marked by a diverse and extensive training background, with 1st Dan ranks in **Ryu Kyu Kobudo Kai** and **Doce Pares Arnis, Eskrima, & Kali**, showcasing his well-rounded expertise across various combat disciplines.
In his quest for continuous learning, Jonathan has trained in several other martial arts styles globally, including:
- **Muay Thai** at the Phuket Muay Thai Camp in Thailand
- **Kung Fu** at the Bu Bi Zhen International Kung Fu School in Yangshuo, China
- **Aikido** at the Aikikai Hombu in Tokyo, Japan, under the instruction of Doshu Ueshiba
- **Goju-Ryu Karate** at the Doushikan Hombu in Kyoto, Japan, under the guidance of Bokuhara Gen Sensei (8th Dan JKF) and Bokuhara Michiyo (5th Dan JKF)
- **Kendo** in Kyoto, Japan, under Shibagaki Haruo Sensei (7th Dan)
- **Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu**, receiving instruction from Royler Gracie
Jonathan is passionate about the profound benefits martial arts offers, especially the personal growth that Karate instills in students of all ages. He firmly believes that Karate strengthens not only the body but also tempers the soul, forging an indomitable spirit that positively influences all aspects of life.
Jonathan is also actively involved in the martial arts competition scene. He competes and referees at **ISKA tournaments**, where he serves as Head Referee and Arbitrator. His dedication to fair play and excellence earned him the **Referee of the Year** award in 2006. Further cementing his legacy, Jonathan was inducted into the **Martial Arts Hall of Fame** in 2009 as Martial Arts Instructor of the Year.
In 2019, Jonathan led the **Australian Team** as Head Coach at the US Open World Martial Arts Championships, the largest martial arts tournament globally. Under his guidance, the team of 30 athletes achieved remarkable success, with every member earning at least a first-place title in their events, and no one placing lower than 5th.
An accredited instructor with the **Martial Arts Industry Association** and the **NSW Department of Sport and Recreation**, Jonathan holds a Martial Arts Prohibited Weapons Permit from the NSW Police Commissioner. He takes great pride in passing on the knowledge and wisdom he has gained over the years to anyone eager to learn, fostering a legacy of excellence and personal development in martial arts.
