Family is a cornerstone of Shihan Peter’s life. He is a proud father of four children, three of whom are boys who have successfully earned their black belts, showcasing the values of hard work and perseverance that Shihan Peter instills in his family. His youngest child, a daughter, is currently a Blue Belt in the Warrior class, continuing the family tradition of martial arts involvement. Shihan Peter lives in Maitland with his fiancée, Maria, who actively participates in the Family Fitness class, further emphasizing the family-oriented nature of their lifestyle.

Shihan Peter’s martial arts journey began in 1985 when he started training in ZEN-DO-KAI freestyle karate at a dojo located on Banks Street in East Maitland. His dedication and passion for martial arts quickly led him to progress through the ranks, and by 1992, he had earned his 3rd Degree Black Belt. In 1993, he co-developed a new martial arts style called Kaizen Ryu, a name that reflects the philosophy of continuous improvement. The following year, Shihan Peter took over as the Chief Instructor of Kaizen Ryu, a role he has embraced with unwavering commitment ever since.

Under his leadership, Kaizen Ryu has flourished, becoming a well-respected martial arts school known for its focus on personal growth and community well-being. Shihan Peter's teaching philosophy is rooted in the mission statement of KIRKWOOD’S INSTITUTE of KARATE, which is to “CONTINUALLY IMPROVE PEOPLE’S LIVES.” He strives to embody this mission in every class, instilling in his students the importance of self-discipline, respect, and the pursuit of a better lifestyle through martial arts training.

To enhance his knowledge and skills, Shihan Peter regularly trains with esteemed martial artists from both Australia and abroad. His travels often take him to America, where he seeks to learn the latest techniques and advancements in the martial arts industry. In a significant milestone in his martial arts career, Shihan Peter traveled to Japan in 2013, where he was awarded his 6th Degree Black Belt in a ceremony attended by his peers and the esteemed Grand Master Yoshitugu Suzuki.
