Tony Bowden

Shihan Tony Bowden is an esteemed figure in the world of martial arts, holding a 6th Dan Black Belt in Kyokushinkai Karate. He is a renowned heavyweight Karate champion, known for his dominance on the tournament circuit for an impressive span of over a decade. With his unwavering toughness and determination, it's no surprise that Shihan Tony earned the reputation as the "hard man" of Kyokushin Karate.

Shihan Tony's illustrious fighting career traces its origins back to the 1980s, when he ventured into both Kyokushin and Non-Contact (FAKO) tournaments. However, it was the Kyokushin tournaments that truly satisfied his competitive spirit, launching him into a remarkably successful career in competition. In a pivotal moment in 1977, Tony participated in the first Australian National Tournament hosted by the AKKA in the Sydney Town Hall, a groundbreaking event for martial arts in Australia. The guest of honor at this prestigious event was none other than Sosai Mas Oyama himself. Despite a compound fracture of his finger, Tony secured second place in the Heavyweight Division that year, with his only regret being unable to receive the winner's trophy from Sosai Mas Oyama. Undeterred, Tony returned the following year in Melbourne to claim victory in the Heavyweight Division and achieve a remarkable second place in the Grand Champion category. He continued his winning streak, clinching three more championships and three Grand Championships before the event ceased to be held.

In 1979, Tony represented Australia at the World Titles in Tokyo, Japan. He demonstrated his skill and resilience by making it to the final 32 competitors. His final bout, which took place on the last day of a grueling three-day tournament, was against the formidable Japanese instructor Sensei Koichi Kawabata. Although Tony narrowly lost on decision, it was hailed as one of his most remarkable fights.

Today, Shihan Tony Bowden dedicates his time and energy to expanding and enhancing the martial arts landscape in Queensland. For the past two decades, he has hosted the National Camp and organized the Queensland State Titles. His commitment to martial arts education has led to the establishment of dojos in various locations, including Townsville, Mackay, Gladstone, Ipswich, Kingscliff, Palm Beach, and Nerang. Shihan Tony's enduring legacy not only reflects his remarkable achievements in the ring but also his tireless efforts to promote and improve the practice of Kyokushin Karate in the state of Queensland and beyond.
