Introduction

Brendon Cunningham, a dedicated martial artist, proudly holds the esteemed rank of 4th Dan (Yondan) in Kyokushinkai Karate. His journey in the world of martial arts began in the picturesque town of Hawkes Bay, New Zealand, where he was first introduced to the captivating art of Kyokushin Karate. It was in 1979 that his passion for this incredible style ignited, under the guidance of his original instructors, Vern and Gary Daniels.

After a brief period residing in Frankston, Victoria, Brendon and his family returned to his hometown of Hawkes Bay, where he continued his Kyokushin training in the vibrant city of Hastings. There, he had the privilege of training with Senpai Tony Caldwell, affectionately known as "Pinky," forging a deep bond that would span an impressive decade. The training during this period was known for its intensity and brutality, instilling in Brendon a profound appreciation for the renowned aspects of the Kyokushin style, particularly the development of an indomitable spirit. It is through the rigorous training and the principles of overcoming adversity and hardship that practitioners of Kyokushin Karate are able to lead more fulfilling and purposeful lives. While these concepts may not be immediately apparent, with time and dedication, they manifest themselves, and the practitioner becomes one with their karate, and karate becomes an integral part of their being. Reflecting on his formative years, Sensei Brendon fondly recalls, "It was during my time training with Senpai Tony at Bj's dojo where I learned never to give up. Senpai Tony guided me to victory in five Hawkes Bay titles and two NZ National titles during my early years as a Karateka."

Sensei Brendon firmly believes in the transformative power of Karate and the profound impact that the Kyokushin style can have on its students. With a deep sense of purpose and a strong commitment to upholding the legacy passed down to him, he has made it his mission to better the lives of individuals young and old within his community. The Shinzo Dojo, located in Canberra, Australia, serves as a nurturing environment for students of all ages, where new students are warmly welcomed into the Kyokushin family.
